The Taproot Foundation organizes groups of professionals to complete pro bono projects for non-profit organizations. My first project with Taproot was the re-design and re-launch of the website for Carpenter's Shelter, a local organization working to end homelessness in the region.

As the web developer on the team, I built a WordPress theme from the designer's Photoshop comps and wrote the necessary template functions to support it. Prior to the site launch, I worked closely with staff and volunteers from the shelter who continue to maintain the site after the Taproot team finished the launch, and refined the WordPress implementation based on their feedback. To finish off the project, I trained some of those users on the more advanced aspects of managing the site. I also wrote a comprehensive user guide covering content and user management, and administrative tasks like performing backups.

For my work on the project and the user guide, I was awarded the first Certificate of Excellence in the area of technical expertise on Taproot's second anniversary in DC, and I'm told that the guide has been used as an example for other Taproot teams.
